Who was Matteo Messina Denaro: the Cosa Nostra Boss

Matteo Messina Denaro, known as "Diabolik" and "U' Siccu", was one of the most powerful and feared bosses of the Sicilian Mafia. Born on April 26, 1962, in Castelvetrano, Trapani province, Sicily, he remained a fugitive for over 30 years before being arrested on January 16, 2023, in Palermo.

Son of Francesco Messina Denaro, himself a mafioso, Matteo grew up immersed in Cosa Nostra's culture and rose through its ranks to become its undisputed leader after the capture of Totò Riina and Bernardo Provenzano.

Matteo Messina Denaro is considered responsible for numerous crimes, including the 1992 massacres that killed judges Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino. He also took part in the 1993 bombings in Milan, Rome, and Florence. His nickname "Diabolik" reflects the cunning and ruthlessness that defined his criminal career.

During his decades on the run, Messina Denaro remained hidden in Sicily, continuing to run Cosa Nostra's affairs through trusted associates. His arrest — made in a private clinic where he was receiving cancer treatment — marked the end of an era for Sicilian organized crime. He died on September 25, 2023, from colon cancer.
